Specialist Subsea Sensor System

OceanTools Ltd recently supplied a bespoke underwater system to a valued customer. The system was designed to enable the activation of a customer provided subsea sensor, and display of the sensor measurements.

Designed to operate at 4000 metres ocean depth, the system comprised an OceanCELL-38 rechargeable battery pack and a C-Switch to enable the sensor to be switched on using the manipulator of a ROV, and an OceanDISP to display the sensor reading in situ by the ROV camera. The components were supplied with custom wiring to enable RS485 communication.

Brian Hector, Technical Sales Manager at OceanTools commented:

“This was a great project to work on, the customer came to us with a problem that needed to be overcome and the team used their knowledge and product lines to design a system that addressed the customers challenges and provided a satisfying solution. These are the jobs we love to get our teeth into.”

The OceanDISP is a versatile, light-activated, deep ocean display unit with a high visibility LED matrix display. With acetal housing, aluminium front plate and acrylic window it is rugged and resilient with an operating depth rating of 7000m. Data from a wide range of inputs can be displayed, including tilt sensors, gyrocompasses, pressure, temperature and flow sensors. Numerical data can be scrolled or sequenced, or the unit can act as a serial terminal display. The revised electronics support an analogue input to allow analogue voltage signals to be displayed. Additionally, two boards may be daisy-chained to give two lines of information in a single housing. Battery life is extended by external TTL control or programmable light sensor activation periods.

The C-Switch is a rugged and reliable range of ROV or diver operated underwater switches machined from nylon and stainless steel and designed for maximum longevity in harsh underwater environments. The C-Switch uses a non-contact switching method to allow switching up to 3A at 24VDC, 4A at 120VAC, or 2A at 240VAC. It has Normally Open, Normally Closed and Common connections, and can be supplied with a suitable Impulse IL3FS mating connector tail. The rotary mechanism may be operated via any ROV manipulator or a diver's hand, with a maximum operating torque of 50Nm. Positive detents prevent accidental turns due to shock or vibration. Compact Mini and Micro variants with a smaller lever or rotary knob are also available.

The OceanCELL range of rechargeable subsea battery packs are suitable for powering gyrocompasses, tilt sensors, underwater displays and other instrumentation. The OceanCELL-12 consists of a single UN 38.3 Approved lithium-ion polymer battery pack, assembled in a 3000m depth rated housing. The OceanCELL-25 and OceanCELL-38 contain multiple individually UN 38.3 Approved battery packs for extended periods of operation down to 4000m depth.

An optional voltage monitoring board allows remote monitoring of the battery status by reporting on-load voltage readings via RS232 or RS485 serial output. Custom battery packs may be designed to a client's precise specifications. A C-Switch underwater switch can reliably isolate the battery power for safer operation both on deck and subsea.
